This weekend I was watching the movie for a writing project in one of my classes (Arabs on film). When I saw the part where Aladdin is talking to the women while hiding from the guards. It struck me how those women knew who he was. Who do you think they were? Some women he just randomly knew and were keeping an eye on him, since he had no parents?

What do you think?

Well, I really don't know. *Personally*, I think that they took the place of Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, and they just used the same dialogue. Think about Kassim taunting him for getting the guards after them so early.

Aladdin: "Trouble? No way, you're only in trouble if you get caught!"

Rasoul: "Gotcha!"

Aladdin: "I'm in trouble!"

Rasoul: "And this time..." [Abu jumps on top of his head.]

Babkak: "Perfect timing Abu, as usual."

Omar: "Come on let's get outta here."

And then you hear the music of Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim start to play. I don't know. That's just my own personal thoughts. I guess it's open to anyone's opinion.

They may have adapted it from the original characters. As for the movie as is, I'd say they're pretty much women who are familiar with Al, know he's a pretty decent kid if always getting in trouble, much like some mothers and other women (and some guys) who are familiar with their neighbors. Agrabah isn't that big, and Al probably kept himself to certain areas, so there would be some familiarity. Not sure if the women had any particular parental feelings towards him, but they know him.

In story reason: Probably neighbors; Aladdin seems very popular, what with other people randomly breaking out in song about him a few seconds later. Laughing

Out of story reason: The lady who speaks to him is actually the character design of Aladdin's mom back before she got cut from the story. So I suspect that might have been his mom's line originally and they didn't want to waste all the time they'd spent animating that scene. Laughing Or else it was a new scene and they just put her in there as an inside joke for the animators.

I really doubt that those lines came from Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, because they'd been gone from the story since 1988 or 1989, and if Howard had written those lines then he and Alan would probably have recorded them along with the rest of that song and it would be part of the Music Behind the Magic CD right now. One Jump Ahead was inspired by the song Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim, though, so that's probably what you're hearing; good ear! Very Happy

Like I said, mine was just a guess.

Calluna, do you have any articles/other materials where I could find more info about the original script? So I could figure out like a "timeline" of when things happened? I'd be really interested to know more stuff about the original version of Aladdin.

Uh, let's see... The book that comes with "The Music Behind the Magic" has some information about it (epecially about the first version that Howard Ashman did), Aladdin: The Making of an Animated film goes into it a bit. I also found out a lot of this from Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio's website's messageboard; I've got copies of a lot of the relevant posts here. There were also a few good articles about it in Entertainment Weekly that they still have online:

I have a few other articles and things but they're not online. Some of them are in the partial timeline I already started; after I'm done with dinner I'll go dig that out. Smile

I'm sure that they mentioned something about that bit on the dvd, saying something about it was supposed to be his mom or something? Pretty much what Calluna said...I'm sure I heard it on the dvd though.

Yeah, I think you're right; that's where I heard that part. Smile

Ok, so I watched 2 hours of extras, and when I didn't hear anything about it on there, I put the first disc in. And guess what? I couldn't find anything said there either! I looked at all the extras and then I looked at each of the commentaries at that section of the movie, and nothing! We're either making it up or we heard it somewhere else. Laughing
