I only managed to beat it on a computer emulator years ago with a cheat code to get infinite lives

Tell me about it. I don’t think I even got past the 4th stage without using a password.

Fun trivia: The game was designed by Shinji Mikami, who later created Resident Evil. And some of the music in the game was done by Setsuo Yamamoto, who also worked on the first Mega Man X game and various titles in the Street Fighter series.
